Lauren S. Enders, MA, CCC-SLP Is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist. She currently works as a full-time Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT) Consultant for Bucks County Intermediate Unit in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She has had a passion for using AAC and other forms of assistive technology to support students with complex communication needs and complex bodies since she began her career in 1995. Lauren presents regularly at national conferences including Closing the Gap, ATIA, and ASHA as well as more intimate conferences, speaking engagements and webinars. She has shared her knowledge via blog posts on Praacticalaac.org and USSAAC’s SpeakUp blog as well as articles published in ASHA Leader and Closing the Gap Solutions Magazines. Lauren enjoys sharing AAC and AT related resources and networking with others in the field via her professional social media accounts on Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Looking to inject new life into your educational or therapeutic “toolbox”? If so, this workshop is for you!! This fast-paced and high-energy two-day workshop, you will learn about many engaging activities and tools to target a variety of educational and language goals. The activities and tools presented will be reusable, easily adaptable, and include many “out of the box” and sometimes downright silly ideas. The goal is for you to leave with a renewed excitement for instruction as well as a re-energized “toolbox” full of (largely free or inexpensive) activities that can be implemented immediately with limited preparation time!

Workshop topics and activities will include: Best practices in language instruction, Discussion of the importance of engagement, Tools to identify student interests and language targets throughout the day, A large variety of language learning activities for even students with complex (eg. AAC) needs, Activities that can be reused without becoming tiresome or boring, Activities that fit neatly into a classroom or therapeutic routine Activities take into consideration unique student interests and preferences, Discussions and demonstrations of engaging activities using (no-tech) toys, books, games and manipulatives and how to use and reuse them to target a variety of language skills and functions, Discussions and demonstrations of engaging activities using high-tech tools to target a variety of language skills and functions Participant activities including make-and-take activities, Provision of an organized and easily accessible resource document that can be referred to after the workshop has concluded, Participants are encouraged to bring laptops, Chromebooks, or tablets (iPad/Android); however, these devices are not essential to participate in this workshop.

LEARNER OUTCOMES

After attending this two-day workshop, participants will be able to:

State at least 3 best practices for language instruction
Describe at least 2 benefits of using “reusable” activities that can be used repeatedly to target different language skills
Name at least 5 newly learned “no-tech” activities and describe how to use each activity to target a specific student/client language goal
Name at least 5 newly learned “high-tech” tools and state 1 way to use each tool to target a specific student/client language goal
Define the term “day map” and explain how to use a day map to identify a language target in every activity
